ASTM A529 Gr 50 Steel Plate

What is ASTM A529 Gr 50 steel plate?

ASTM A529 Gr 50 steel plate is a high strength, low alloy steel developed for structural applications in offshore structures and shipbuilding. The ‘A529’ designation refers to the ASTM specification while ‘Gr 50’ indicates the minimum specified yield strength of 50 ksi (344 MPa).

Manufacturing Process

A529 Gr 50 plate is produced by thermomechanically controlled processing involving controlled rolling and accelerated cooling after hot rolling. This imparts a fine-grained structure for enhanced mechanical properties.

Due to high strength and fracture toughness, A529 Gr 50 steel is used in dynamically loaded structures like ship plates, offshore jacket structures, drilling rigs, pressure vessels etc. where weight savings are critical. It can replace higher alloy steels in some applications.

Forms and Availability

ASTM A529 Gr 50 plate is available in various sizes and thickness per project requirements. Common forms include plates, flats and shapes for fabrication and erection into structures. Special test reports certify chemical and mechanical properties.

Benefits Over Lower Strength Steels

Higher strength-to-weight ratio allows reduced thickness and weight. Toughness improves safety against brittle failures. Good weldability permits fabrication and erection at site.

Standards Equivalence

Equivalent grades as per other standards are JIS G3106 SS400, BS EN 10025-6 S355JR/J0, ASTM A36 for lower strength, ABS Grade A.
